Massage Modalities
There are hundreds of variations of massage, bodywork, and related therapies. In my practice I utilize the following massage modalities, either individually or together to create a technique that will work for the individual client.
(I have also added acupressure to the list of modalities I am working with and one day I will add a description of what that means, but not today!)
Swedish Massage
One of the most common and well-known massage techniques, Swedish massage is a dynamic system of treatment designed to balance the body by increasing circulation, oxygen and nutrients in the cells while decreasing waste encourages the body to work more efficiently.
Five basic strokes, all flowing primarily toward the heart, are used to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. Swedish massage creates a wonderful sense of health and wellbeing.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep-tissue massage is utilized to affect the sub-layer of musculature and fascia. The muscles must be relaxed in order to effectively perform deep-tissue massage, otherwise tight surface muscles prevent reaching the deeper layers of muscle. Deep Tissue massage uses many of the same techniques as Swedish, incorporating slow strokes with more direct deep finger pressure, focusing on specific areas to alleviate chronic patterns of tension, adhesions and scar tissue.
For many people Deep Tissue work is very effective, especially when treating chronic issues. However, many people request more pressure thinking that if the therapist pushes hard enough, they can get rid of all their knots in an hour. This is not a realistic assumption. Although a one hour massage will be helpful and alleviate the pain temporarily, chronic conditions require a longer commitment to a program that includes exercise, postural assessment, relaxation techniques and a regular program of massage.
Cupping
An exciting adaptation of an ancient Chinese therapy!
Commonly performed in association with eastern practices such as Acupuncture, cupping is finding its way in the western world. Cupping creates suction and negative pressure which can loosen adhesions and lift connective tissue, bring blood flow to stagnant skin and muscle tissue, along with stimulating the peripheral nervous system. The strong vacuum will mimic the rolling action of deep tissue massage without the discomfort. The sliding movement may be long and draining, or circular and stimulating. The cups are sometimes left in a stationary position for stubborn knots and areas of rigid tissue.
The sensation of cupping is often characterized as deep, warm and tingling long after the treatment has ended. It draws the inflammation out yet does not add to it, and is excellent when used as a contrast therapy with cold compresses or liniments. Massage cupping is often used on the broad areas of the back and the neck but can also be used on the upper arms and legs.
Essential Oils
A holistic treatment using pleasant smelling botanical oils. Essential oils have the ability to affect mood, alleviate fatigue, reduce anxiety, promote healing and much,
much more.
Pregnancy Massage
A pregnant woman has special needs as her body changes with the developing baby. Massage, when properly applied during pregnancy is soothing, safe, natural, and effective. Massage can assist in reducing many of the normal discomforts of pregnancy including: backache, fatigue and tension, sinus congestion, headaches, neck and shoulder problems, muscle cramping, and swelling of hands, feet and legs.
Reiki
A Japanese form of energy healing used to restore order to the body. Reiki healing is a hands-on energy healing art, involving the direct application of universal Chi to strengthen the energy system and bring about deep relaxation, detoxification, and to remove energy blocks. Reiki can be used alone or as part of a Swedish massage.
Chakra Balancing
An energetic healing modality focusing directly on the seven major chakras of the body. A wonderful addition to either Swedish massage or a Reiki treatment.
Chair Massage
Are you vacationing in the Adirondacks and planning a day trip of Whitewater Rafting, Kayaking, Hiking, Skiing, Mountain Biking….or any of the other wonderful outdoor activities we have to offer?
What better way for your group to unwind than chair massage?
Chair massage takes place with the client fully clothed in a chair designed for massage, typically lasts 5 to 15 minutes, chair massage is delightfully refreshing. This is perfect for family reunions, weddings, showers or any occasion!
Treatment focus is based on the needs of the client.
A possible detoxifying treatment could be a combination of Thyme, Basil, Peppermint, Oregano, Wintergreen, Cypress, Marjoram along with two oil blends Valor & Aroma Seiz. This is a wonderful way to bring balance and harmony to the body - physically, mentally, and emotionally.
A relaxation treatment could offer a combination of Lavender, Lemon, Frankincense and Peppermint. Some of the blends used; Thieves, Purification, PanAway, Valor, and Peace & Calming to name a few.
This is a light touch treatment and is very similar to the Young Living Raindrop Therapy technique. The oils are applied to the spine, hands or feet then gently massaged into the skin. Although there is some Swedish massage incorporated, the focus is on the application of the oil. Treatments are extremely relaxing and rebalencing. If possible plan to leave the oils on for as long as possible, at least until the next day.
